Who doesn’t love a budget-priced product with high-end ambitions and with the RENPHO you get a smart scale that easily scoops our ‘Best Value’ title. For all your basic weight and body data, in a clean, eye-catching design that syncs with the main fitness apps such as Apple, Google Fit and Fitbit, for less than $30, you don’t need to look anywhere else.

At such a bargain price, the RENPHO Bluetooth body fat scale has a quality feel in its build and its LED display is bright and easy to read. The device is easy to set up and as long as your smartphone is within easy reach, readily syncs to its app. There are also 11 metrics tracked, including weight, BMI and body fat (it even claims to track your ‘body age’), giving you enough data to track your progress and reach your fitness and weight loss goals.

It does need to be used on a hard and flat surface to give accurate readings, you can’t have multiple user profiles and its Bluetooth range is on the short side, but these are just minor niggles considering its price. And it will still work if not connected, syncing the data the next time the Bluetooth connection to your smartphone hits the mark.

For the money, you get an effective, easy to use a smart scale that would look like a more expensive addition to your bathroom.

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Our best value smart scale comes from Smart home device specialists eufy and offers great spec at an excellent price. Its versatility helped this Bluetooth scale weigh in on the top spot and performs on par with some of the more expensive digital scales in our review. It does need to be recalibrated every so often to maintain its accuracy but that’s a manageable niggle for a digital weight scale that’s robust enough for the whole family to use. It has a sleek, smart design, with the tempered glass design easy to keep clean, while the LCD display is clear and big enough to read at speed.

So, what about the spec for its less than $40 price tag? Well, it comes with its own EufyLife App which, while a little basic, is easy to use and understand. It also easily syncs with both Apple Health and Google Fit and the connectivity range is sufficient, although the nearer your smartphone to the unit the better. It also pairs with up to 20 accounts to track multiple users, without the hassle of changing connection with each user. All the core data is recorded – including weight, BMI, muscle mass and body fat – and it will also hold on to data to synch later if your smartphone is not connected. All in all, eufy Smart Scale with Bluetooth is an excellent ‘on-the-go’ digital scale that’s worthy of our Best value title.

Key Features:

Pairs with up to 20 individual accounts

Differentiates between different family members

Integrates with Apple Health, Fitbit and Google Fit

  • Brandeufy

For hard floor use only

fitbit aria 2 wi-fi smart scale
CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Near the top end of the Instash budget, the Fitbit Aria 2 is a quality digital weight scale that offers both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity to ensure you are always on track.

Stepping on the runaway success of the Fitbit health tracker, this is the latest smart scale incarnation of their Aria model and makes the most of the Fitbit app platform to track all your essential data. As part of your overall health and fitness program, the Aria 2 is a good addition and the build quality almost justifies the price tag. Designed for multi-users – the Aria can recognize up to eight users at a time – it tracks the essentials such as weight, BMA, lean mass, and body fat percentage, automatically syncing the data to your Fitbit for on-the-go tracking. It will also set weight, hydration and nutrition goals as well as log meals. It also throws in a simple calorie tracker and rewards progress with motivation badges (if that’s your thing!) The app, as you’d expect from Fitbit, is versatile and the dashboard user-friendly but is a little fiddly to do the initial set up and the connection can be a little hit and miss but as a practical and information-relevant smart weight scale, this is a nice bit of kit.

Key Features:

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity

Syncs stats automatically to your Fitbit dashboard

Recognizes up to eight users

400lb maximum capacity

Specification:
  • BrandFitbit
  • ModelFB202BK
  • Weight5.69 pounds
Pros

Easily syncs your stats, making a quick and easy read

Good build quality and sleek design

Reliable app once set up

Cons

The connection can be a little weak

Put two heavyweight brands together in the digital scale arena and you get the Body+, a worthy premium choice in our best smart scales review. Nokia has teamed up with Withings to create an excellent all-around smart scale that can step it up when your health and fitness goals need a bit of a boost. This is a smart-looking smart scale that is compact enough to discretely fit anywhere in your home. But when it comes to its functionality, the Body+ is anything but quiet and retiring. It can sync with an impressive range of devices, including the Apple Watch, Fitbit and Google Fit plus over 100 top health and fitness apps. So what data do you get for your smart scale money? You get the ‘full body composition’ package, including weight, body fat, water percentage, muscle, and bone mass plus some nice extras, including pregnancy tracker and Baby Mode for the little ones. Then there’s nutrition tracking and even weather forecast, so you can step off the scale and plan your indoor or outdoor exercise for the day. The Body+ can track up to eight users and all data is automatically synched to its Health Mate app.

The black tempered glass, while stylish, can be a tad difficult to keep clean but with precision weighing to be accurate to 0.2 pounds and 18-month battery life, we can forgive a few dusty feet marks!

We know that Garmin has the rep when it comes to outdoor sports and is the go-to brand for many adventurers, bikers and trail runners. But can they successfully bring their outdoor smart tech to the cozy climes of your bathroom? We’d say yes…and a fine job they have done too with their first venture into the world of digital scales. Yes, it is at the pricier end of our smart scales review, but you do get all the essential weight tracking for your buck, with the Garmin expertise in smart tracking adding to the experience. Configured for up to 16 users, and easy to sync to your smartphone or device, the Wi-Fi-enabled Index connects straight to the Garmin Connect account, so great if you are already a Garmin smart tech user, plus you get free access to their online fitness community. All the essential data you need from a body composition scale is there – weight, BMI, Body fat and water percentage, plus skeletal muscle and bone mass. You need to stand on its tempered glass surface barefoot and on a good, hard surface for accurate results, but its accuracy is consistent and the tracked data simple and effective to use to set goals and track progress.

The main downside is that you need to have a Garmin account and the device is not compatible with most other devices and software. But if you are a Garmin devotee, this is the smart scale route to go to keep all your tracking happily connected.

That’s some promise if the name of Greater Goods is anything to go by, but they totally get away with it with this great value smart body fat scale.

From its compatibility to all the popular apps (Fitbit, Google, Apple Health and so on…) to its classy design and cool looks, we really like Greater Goods Bluetooth Smart Body Fat Scale. The tempered glass top is durable, and it does come with an impressive five warranty for extra reassurance. It can also work with up to eight individual user profiles, syncing data securely to its Weight Guru app for easy and instant information review. And it measures all the essential data you need, including weight, BMI, body fat, lean mass, water weight, & bone mass to help you keep on track. The Bluetooth connection is fast, and its range is decent. And if you forget your phone when you go to weigh in, it will still record and store the data, ready to sync later. We like the display too, solid and clear, and shows not only your weight but all your other measurements for a quick on-the-spot review.

The Greater Goods smart scale runs on four AAA batteries, but they can be sapped quite quickly so we suggest you always have a spare supply on hand. But with a good 400 pounds maximum weight capacity, this is a well-performing all-around smart scale that can step up to the plate.

QardioBase 2 Wireless Smart Scale

qardiobase 2 wireless smart scale
CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

Bucking the square smart scale trend, the QardioBase is a little bit of rebel on the digital weight tracking front but at the end of the day all that matters is how it performs and the data you get. And overall, it hits the mark. The QardioBase 2 is the most expensive in our best smart scale review and you get a nice bit of spec for the money. But there are some limitations, both in tech and in design.

But first, the really good stuff. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled, syncing is a breeze (even if your phone is not to hand) and its app is best buds with the most popular apps and devices out there, including Apple Health and Google Fit. Data-wise is logs the good stuff, including weight and body composition detail such as muscle mass, body fat, and water. Then there are the nice add-ons if you need them, such as the Pregnancy mode and it can be used for multiple users, so a good addition to the active (or not so active) family. And you may like (or not!) the smiley emojis that aim to motivate you towards your goal. Finally, there’s no need for batteries, just recharge when needed, which QardioBase say should be on average once a year. We like.  The circular design can be a little awkward though, especially when trying to read the display from above and to keep it accurate you may find you need to recalibrate it regularly to keep it on its toes.

Key Features:

WI-FI and Bluetooth connectivity

Compatible to a good range of devices and apps

Pregnancy mode records different trimester

Impressive 450-pound maximum capacity

Specification:
  • BrandQardio
  • ModelB200-IAW
  • Weight6.7 pounds
Pros

Good range of biometrics for effective tracking

Quick and easy to set up and go

Cons

The design makes the central display a little awkward to read

Smart Scale Buying Guide & FAQ

How We Chose Our Selection of Smart Scales

As with any connected device, you need to ensure its not a case of style over substance and, when it comes to your new smart weight scale, they give reliable and consistent data that you need. We looked at the following criteria to come up with our final best smart scale shortlist:

Brand - not only are you getting a reputation but also peace of mind about performance.

Reviews – there’s nothing like the first-hand experience to show which products really hit the spot so we’ve listened to users and their insider recommendations.

Software – a fast connection and clear, easy to use data charts are what makes a contender for our best smart scale list.

Ease-of-Use – you need to be able to step on and go, so we looked for a quick turn on and intuitive Apps that give you all the data you really need.

Price -when it comes to value, you need to get the right quality and performance from your smart scale.

best smart scales

Features To Look For In Smart Scales

Connectivity – whether you choose to go Bluetooth or Wi-Fi with your new smart scale, you’ll need a solid and reliable connection to get the accurate and consistent data you are looking for. A decent, workable range is needed too.

Biometrics – the range of health data you go for will depend on what you are looking to track via your smart scale. This data syncs to the associated app and can track a host of biometrics, including height, weight, heart rate, and BMI.

Accuracy – it’s most likely that you are opting for smart rather than old style manual scales to get more accurate and consistent readings you can work with as you monitor your progress so look at what the sensors offer. These sit beneath the tempered glass of the scale and should be accurate to within a couple of pounds if they are to be worth the investment.

Display – go for a set of digital scales with an easy to read LCD display, that’s kinder on the eyes. Some models, particularly the more expensive, may also have an LED screen.

Style – bathroom smart scales come in a range of styles and looks – from the minimalist ‘glass’ look to cool chrome and every color in-between. It’s a personal choice but our tips include looking for scales that are not too large and you are happy to have on display as they work at their best when kept flat and stable in the same place for consistent readings.

Features - the features can be scaled up (pardon the pun) depending on the level of data you want to collect so check what a product offers you to make sure it matches your weight loss and data tracking expectations. In-app features can include a host of extras, including diet and exercise advice and programs, multi-user tracking, food plans, and tailored pregnancy trackers.

Bluetooth vs Wi-Fi Scales

You can buy either Bluetooth-enabled or WI-FI scales (that are also Bluetooth) although WI-FI scales are generally a little more expensive. So, what’s the difference?

Bluetooth weight scales offer all or most of the functionality and data tracking of WI-FI, but you need to always have your Bluetooth device (smartphone or fitness tracker for example) close to hand. If your device is out of your smart scale range, then you’re a little stuck. Some of the more expensive Bluetooth scales can log a recorded weight, ready for the next data synch, but many can’t so make sure you check when you buy.

A Wi-Fi enabled a set of smart scales don’t have this problem as they work consistently via your WI-FI router, happily and accurately synching all your data, as long as there is a signal. WI-FI scales also tend to be more reliable when it comes to synching that essential data.

Smart Scale FAQ

Q: What are smart scales?

A: Going beyond simply measuring your weight when you stand on them, the digital scales can also measure and log your overall health, fitness and weight loss goals using connective technology to keep you on track. The best smart scales, also known as body composition scales or body analyzer scales, can track not only your weight but your body fat, BMI and muscle mass, with some models even recording your bone mass and heart rate, synching the data collected to build up an overall picture of your progress.

Associated apps then enable you to log and keep track of your weight loss and fitness goals, using the data supplied by your smart scales and many can also be connected to your other smart fitness devices such as fitness and activity trackers for a real 360 view of your health and fitness.

Q: Should I use a smart scale if I have a pacemaker?

A: There have been some concerns that the biometric sensors used in digital scales could interfere with the function of a pacemaker, but most models are perfectly safe. We recommend exercising sensible caution before buying a smart scale if you do have a pacemaker - so seek your doctor’s advice and certainly read the product’s details and instructions first.

best smart scales

Q: What to do when the scale is not connecting to my smartphone?

A: There may be times when your smart scale loses its connectivity. It may be a short blip but if you struggle to get synched, then there are a few checks you can do, to get you and your digital scale back up and running:

  • Check the battery – particularly if you are using your scales every day, the smart tech may be draining the batteries quicker than you may have expected.
  • Make sure your smart device is within the smart scale’s range, especially if it is Bluetooth-enabled.
  • Check the settings on the associated app – there may have been new updates which need adding for optimum performance.
  • If still in doubt, go old school – switch your smartphone off and then back on again to restart the app.

Q: Can I use a Smart Scale without an app?

A: You can still use your digital weight scale without an app or being connected at the time, but all you will get is a physical weight reading on the LCD or LED without any additional data or insight into your weight tracking. Some models will record data to be synched later but if you don’t plan to regularly use your smart scales connected to its app, perhaps you would be better saving your money from the get-go with a manual set of scales without the added technology.

Q: Is there a minimum age limit to use a Smart Scale?

A: You will find your chosen smart scale product and associated app may well have their own recommendations or restrictions as to a user’s minimum age and the data they can track but as a rule of thumb, it is best to take a sensible, healthy approach when it comes to under 16s using digital body analyzer scales. Seek medical advice from your doctor if you are unsure as it is important to maintain a healthy attitude to weight among young people. If your child is considered to be a healthy weight, then there is no need to track their weight and any associated trends that the smart scale data can supply.

Q: What is the maximum weight supported by the Scale?

A: Most smart weight and fitness scales are designed to be able to take up to 350 pounds, but some models can exceed this to around 450 pounds, so do check the individual product’s details. Smart scales for home use have a weight limit as most are made from tempered glass which is robust but does have a maximum safe weight load.

Q: What surface can I operate my Smart Scale on?

A: Due to the technology and sensors that are tucked away inside your new smart weight scale, they need to be placed on certain surfaces for optimum performance.  A smooth and flat hard surface such as bathroom tiles is the best, making sure the floor is level so you can get the most accurate readings from all the delicate sensors.

best smart scales

Q: Is the Scale waterproof?

A: The bathroom is the natural home for the domestic smart weight scale, so most are built to be waterproof but don’t assume. It’s essential to check the manufacturer’s spec sheet for your chosen digital scale. Look for smart scales are that are total unit waterproof and sealed (rather than just the battery unit) – we’re not suggesting you use your digital weight scale submerged in the bath, but you need to be sure your smart tech is protected.

Q: How often should I replace my Scale’s batteries?

A: It does depend on the model and type you choose, but as we know with all our other smart technology, connected devices can eat through battery life! The average battery shelf life for a digital scale is up to six months, but the more often you use your smart bathroom scale, the more it will zap the battery so check the battery life levels regularly and have back up batteries ready to replace.
