5 Ways To Reduce Embarrassing Body Odor

How To Prevent Body Odor

You can look good and feel good but if your BO levels are not cooperating, then your grooming efforts could be futile. Body odour is never pleasant. It can affect your self-esteem, lower your confidence, and be downright embarrassing. The fact of the matter is that we all sweat, which is a good thing. The pungent part sets in when bacteria start to build up and multiply in the presence of sweat. These bacteria break down proteins and fatty acids, creating foul body odour in the process.

But now that you know what instigates strong-smelling body odour, you can work on things that help to eliminate it or, at the very least, reduce it. To get you started and to give you a few tips on your grooming routine, we suggest you do the following.

1. Cleanse Using Antibacterial Soap

Taking regular baths and showers is the first step towards eliminating odour-causing bacteria. Water on its own is not enough, however, and your cleansing routine should include the use of an antibacterial body wash or soap. These cleansers have been specifically designed to remove bacteria.

As you wash, you should pay special attention to the parts of your body that are more prone to sweating. Clean under your arms, your feet, in between folds, and all the other wobbly bits too. Finish off by thoroughly drying yourself with a fresh towel – this will help to prevent bacteria from breeding on your skin.

2. Try An Antiperspirant

Your morning primp-and-prime should always include the application of a reliable roll-on or sweat-reducing spray. With a quick search online, you will discover a wide variety of antiperspirants for men. From alcohol-based types to more natural solutions that are great for sensitive skin, the options are limitless and you are bound to find a brand that smells as good as it works.

It might be important at this point to remind you that your usual body spray is not necessarily an antiperspirant. Body sprays work well to mask smells but antiperspirants, on the other hand, are made to fight and kill bacteria before they even get the opportunity to do their nasty business.

3. Watch What You Eat

While deodorants for men do an excellent job at covering up bad BO and tend to attract the ladies instead of repelling them, smelly business is often more than just skin deep. Very often it’s the food that we eat that’s to blame. Yup! Food sources like cabbage, cauliflower, onions, and garlic – for instance – contain a pungent aroma that can escape through your pores when you sweat. And if this wasn’t enough, caffeine-loaded drinks and alcohol can also increase sweat levels.

So, if you’re planning on impressing someone, we suggest you keep away from the “smellier” dishes and focus more on friendly detoxifying meals that are loaded with fibre and greens that naturally cleanse your insides – like cucumbers, spinach, and peppers.

4. Wear Clothes That Breathe

The more sweat you can prevent, the better your chances are of limiting the number of odour-causing bacteria on your skin. One way to reduce sweat is to wear clothes that breathe. Fabrics like cotton, silk, and wool, allow air to enter your clothes – this helps to dry moisture as it settles on your skin.

A garment that traps your perspiration will make you sweat more. This creates an environment where bacteria can thrive and you could end up smelling worse than a donkey’s, well, “donkey”.

5. Cover Up

If desperate times call for desperate measures, then covering bad smells up with something more pleasantly intoxicating is always a fall-back option. While a good cologne or solid cologne might not eradicate nasty body odour, it should mask it long enough so that it’s more bearable.

Premium quality colognes are especially good at putting bacteria on the back-burner as they secure themselves to the forefront and make their (often bold) statement.
