It looks like it’s full steam ahead for Valve’s Steam Machine initiative! The company behind gaming franchise favorites like Half-Life and Portal recently updated their online store to include ASUS’ Steam Machine, the ROG GR8S.
If at first glance, the GR8S looks more like a game console rather than a traditional-gaming PC it’s because the Steam Machine initiative is Valve’s foray into the living room. Looks can be deceiving, however, and the GR8S packs a lot of power into its 2.5-liter chassis. Powering the device is your choice of i5/i7 processor and a NVIDIA GeForce 9 series graphics card. The GR8S also includes SupremeFX audio, Intel Ethernet and GameFirst III (for lag-free online gaming), built-in Miracast receiver, and dual-band 802.11 ac Wi-Fi.
ASUS claims that the device produces very little heat and doesn’t consume much power. Additionally the GR8S has an operating noise level of just 20db when idle. So just how upgradeable is a Steam Machine? Well, unlike a gaming PC you’ll be able to change out the hard drive and RAM but that’s about it. Overall, it’s a fairly good deal for the $699 price point. If you pre-order now, you can expect to receive your device sometime in November.
