Are CBD Products Good For Our Dogs?
Dogs—and most mammals, as it turns out—have an endocannabinoid system similar to humans. This means CBD and the other cannabinoids work to block doggy pain signals and reduce inflammation, much like in humans.
“Most dogs find relief for pain and seizures with CBD products when dosed properly for their size/weight,” says Chris Denicola, founder of Prism Science and Santeer CBD. According to research by Colorado State, “89 percent of dogs who received CBD in the clinical trial had a reduction in the frequency of seizures.” Denicola says 2 mg of CBD per kilogram of your dog’s weight is the guidance for dosage, referencing research from Cornell University and Colorado State University.
In an interview for Petage.com, Denicola says that, “Being a dog owner myself and originally building the pet product for her, I can say our products cost less than the pharmaceuticals that vets wanted to put her on, including glucosamine, which is expensive, difficult to take, and shows iffy results.” Denicola has been involved in cannabis and hemp production development, quality control, manufacturing, and innovation since 2014.

Consult your vet before giving your dog any dietary supplements. Vets aren’t receiving much official guidance from federal and state regulators and boards, but they can put the current research conclusions into perspective. “Coming from a chemist’s viewpoint, CBD as a compound is safe. Where it gets to be a little tricky and where the consumer needs to keep their eyes open is with the final product they are purchasing,” said Denicola. “Make sure there is a clean and easy to understand COA (Certificate of Analysis). The COA will show what the company name is, make sure they match, it will show the product name, and it will show how much CBD and THC are in the product.”
Ask your vet if she has any trial packs, or pick some up at your local pet store or dispensary. Read product recommendations and proceed slowly, watching your dog closely for how it reacts. You know your dog better than anyone, so don’t second guess yourself, whether your dog’s reaction is positive, negative, or neutral.
