Volkswagen XL1

With all the giant leaps forward that car companies are making in fuel efficiency, you’ve got to wonder why the technologies haven’t taken off yet. We’re no conspiracy theorists, but it seems like when you can churn out a car of the Volkswagen XL1′s caliber, an overpriced gas crisis should be the last thing on anyone’s mind (or budget). Until whoever stops whatever they’re doing to fleece us at the pump, however, we can dream about the day when more people are driving around in cars like this.

The Volkswagen XL1 delivers an amazing 261 miles per gallon. Perhaps the only caveat to this beautiful looking machine is that it reaches speeds of only 99 miles per hour, but you do know the speed limit is 65, right? It can reportedly go 62 miles per hour while only using 8.3 horsepower, and travel 32 miles while coughing out zero emissions. Okay, population of the world, if you’re so serious about saving the planet, the ball’s in your court.
