The Toyota FT86 II—insider talk for ‘prototype’—is one of the latest and most-anticipated incarnations from Toyota in over a decade. Its overall form aping a Hyundai Genesis Coupe on steroids (no complaints here), the FT86 concept above (most likely the final one before production) recently debuted at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show. The RWD FT-86 is being developed in collaboration with Subaru and its own version of the FT-86, the Subaru Boxer; the latter’s also going to boast RWD, a shocker considering Subaru’s long-lived infatuation with all-wheel drive.
Production of the FT86 (and Boxer) is slated for 2012; however, engineers at Toyota and Subaru have been pretty tight-lipped about the final specs. It is known, though, that the coupe will more-than-likely boast a 200hp, boxer-type gas engine mated to a 6-speed manual/semi-manual tranny. Toyota officials also maintain that the body is designed with an ultra-low center of gravity and super F1-like aerodynamics…and judging from the photos, the latter would likely make an F-22 Raptor blush.
Once automotive journalists get their paws on it next year, we’ll certainly find out if the FT-86 II lives up to all the hype.
