Oculus Rift

By Jason Bacchetta on August 2, 2012

Attention gamers: virtual reality in your living room will soon be here.

The Oculus Rift is a Kickstarter project that has already raised nearly a million dollars in funding. It features a resolution of 1280×800 (640×400 in each eye), ultra-low latency head tracking with six degrees of freedom, and a 110 degree diagonal and 90 degree horizontal field of view. It supports DVI/HDMI and USB inputs, and somehow they’ve managed to get everything into a unit that weighs about half a pound.

Expect the upcoming DOOM 3 BFG Edition to be the first Oculus-ready game. And if the specs don’t convince you, maybe the outstanding reviews will:

  • “Rift could be the closest we’ve come to Star Trek’s holodeck.” - Gamespy
  • “…the effect of using the Oculus Rift as you play is mind-blowing.” G4TV
  • “…we found ourselves entirely absorbed; a gaming experience with a level of immersion genuinely unlike anything else we have ever encountered.” - CVG
