Boeing Phantom Ray

Boeing Phantom Ray

Men sure as hell love their big, brutish toys. Besides 4×4 trucks and perhaps speedboats, the only thing more badass are things that fly really fast—like the Boeing X-45 Phantom Ray.

Looking every bit like a Stealth Bomber, sans the windshield and black skin, the Phantom Ray is a tweaked X-45 UCAV (Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle) and is in development for the U.S. Navy Joint-Unmanned Combat Air System (J-UCAS) program and DARPA. It first flew from Edwards Air Force Base at a top speed of 178 knots (even though capable of nearly 647mph) at 7,500 feet, courtesy of one G.E. F404 102D powerplant. It’s mission? To provide surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence and, best of all, a royal ass-whooping to terrorists. Oh, it can also perform aerial refueling of other aircraft. So yeah, this high-tech bird’s talented as hell.

To the chagrin of even yours truly, Boeing isn’t offering the Phantom Ray to individuals.

Commercial Space Station | Space Hotel

Commercial Space Station

Planning your next family vacation? Why not a five-day stay in space?

Orbital Technologies has recently announced that they’re planning to send a space hotel into orbit 217 miles up. The hotel will fit 7 guests in four cabins and would have huge windows for a stunning view.

It’ll take two days to get there via a Soyuz rocket, and it won’t be ready until 2016. But chances are you’ll need at least that long to save up for the epic trip. In fact, at nearly $1 million per person, unless you’re raking in some serious cash, you’ll need a lot longer than 5 years to come up with that kind of capital.

EdgeWalk

EdgeWalk

Toronto just got a new attraction, which also happens to be the tallest. And if you’re one of those thrill-seekers who gets all tingly inside when the thought of falling 1100 feet to your death comes to mind, then this is for you.

$175 will get you a ticket to the top of Toronto’s CN tower, where you’ll be able to walk around the circumference of the roof. There are no side rails, but fortunately – or unfortunately depending on how crazy you really are – you’ll be strapped into a harness that’s attached to an overhead guard rail.

Feel free to lean over the edge to get a better view (as if it weren’t good enough already). Be sure to send us photos. We’ll be sitting in the safety of our homes… 1st floor.

Apple iPhone 4 (White)

Apple iPhone 4 (White)

No doubt you’ve heard it already. When Apple releases news, the media monkeys jump on it. But just in case you were stuck in your cubicle all day without internet access, you may be happy to hear that the iPhone 4 will be available in white as of tomorrow.

The white iPhone 4 has exactly the same specs as the black, so unless you’ve been holding out for the white version, there’s really not much reason to celebrate. The black looks so much better anyway… just sayin’.

Besides, the iPhone 5 will be out next week and you’ll no longer be the cool kid in your neighborhood.

Boeing 747-8 | Intercontinental Jumbo Jet

Boeing 747-8 | Intercontinental Jumbo Jet

The last time you looked at a 747 passenger airliner, did you find yourself vaguely disappointed in its size? Yeah, they’re pretty big. They’re just not BIG big. Well cheer up, because Boeing’s got your back.

This past Sunday Boeing christened their newest baby, the 747-8, and it’s freaking ginormous. It’s almost 20 feet longer than the previous model 747, and with a whopping 467 seats, and yet it’s lighter than the next-biggest Airbus A380.  It’s quieter and more fuel-efficient than its predecessors, with a range of more than 8000 nautical miles. And unlike most Boeing aircraft, it’s orange. If that matters to you.

Other than its considerable size, its biggest technological advance is “fly by wire” technology, which uses a computer (doesn’t everything?) to reduce vibration before the pilots even know it’s happening. That means a smoother flight and less drink-spillage, which is a win for everybody.

The cargo version has already logged over 1700 hours of flight test time, and the passenger version is expected to lift off in early spring. If all goes well, and if you regularly fly Lufthansa or Korean Air, you could be boarding one of these by the end of the year.

Verizon iPhone

Verizon iPhone

The wait time has been high and the demand has been even higher, but it is all over. Verizon customers… the iPhone is finally within your reach!

The iPhone 4 is set to be available at Verizon and Apple stores starting Thursday, February 10 at 7 am and it looks like the fastest way to get your hands on one would be to reserve it online right now and head on down to your local store as early as possible to pick up your new gadget. You’re looking at $200 for 16 GB and $300 for 32 GB on a two-year contract.

Verizon’s version of the iPhone 4 features a subtle redesign of the antenna system, not because of the past controversy surrounding the original design, but rather because CDMA connections require a different configuration of antennas when compared with the GSM networks used by AT&T. It is also worth noting that Verizon’s version will not allow voice and data usage simultaneously, but that’s a small price to pay for a superior phone company.
