Sony DEV-5 | Digital Recording Binoculars

Sony DEV-5 | Digital Recording Binoculars

Question: why, in all of the digital age, are we just now thinking about digital recording binoculars as a possibility? Sony beat everyone to the punch with one of the most plain-as-the-nose-on-your-face creations of the last 50 years. The Sony DEV-5 is capable of a 20x zoom while maintaining high quality in the image. And while you’re spying on your client’s philandering husband from across town, you’ll also be recording the entire show for later viewing.

Yes, we’re aware that these bad boys can tear down privacy even more so than the lack we are already experiencing, but damn, they’re cool. Of course, we’ll need about two grand if we hope to become one of the lucky owners, but this is electronics: prices fall all the time. And if you need to get closer to the action, make sure you pick up the Parrot AR.Drone Quadricopter while you’re at it.

Poco | Credit Card Sized HD Cameras

Poco | Credit Card Sized HD Cameras

Poco has announced its Poco Pro and Poco 3D cameras, offering a taste of something different for picture and video enthusiasts looking for something to brag about while talking to their tablet-loving cronies this holiday season.

The Pro features full 1080p HD and 14 megapixel capabilities, while the 3D takes it a step further and actually shoots high-def video in that fascinating third dimension. So now, coming soon to a theater near you, “Family Reunion” starring you, the spouse, and two of the most obnoxious people, known as “your in-laws,” ever assembled.

Both of these cameras feature incredibly durable black magnesium construction, which makes for a sleek and beautiful piece of equipment, all in the size of a credit card. More good news: at just $250 apiece, you won’t need a credit card to make these a part of your digicam collection. Consider these to go along with the Lytro Light Field Camera purchase you know you want to make.

Phantom v1610 | High-Speed Camera

Phantom v1610 | High-Speed Camera

Think your iPhone or Android phone’s camera is hot shit? Say hello to the Phantom V1610.

The Phantom is the go-to camera for insanely fast recording. Wielding a widescreen CMOS sensor and producing 1280 x 800 stills, the Phantom can shoot video at up to 1,000,0000 fps (frames per sec). Wait, what?! That’s right, but there’s a catch: at one million fps, that’s seriously pushing the envelope, so the resulting shots won’t  be 1280 x 800. However, turn it down a notch to 16k fps (still hundreds of times faster than any camera phone is or will ever be) and it’ll record in 720p (1280 x 800) and all her glory.

And is it just us, or does the Phantom look perfectly suited to deep sea exploration? Either way, not many people will ever have one (including yours truly): $100,000, base price.

Looxcie 2

Looxcie 2

The Looxcie – a wearable camcorder, was a popular gift for Christmas last year when it was first released. It allowed users to send instant clips of footage to themselves and automatically share it through their social profiles, all with a push of a button. A great gadget for social media junkies who are always finding new ways to share their entire life story with the rest of the world.

Now the Looxcie 2 is out with a few upgrades. It’s nearly half the size and 20% lighter, and they’ve improved the resolution to 480p. There are two versions available, 4GB and 8GB, and you can expect the same battery life as the original (4 hours). For those of you who are into extreme sports, Looxcie 2 has you covered with a few attachments that allow you to attach the device to helmets and other head gear.

And rumor has it that this new version will be iCloud compatible.

Sony 3D Bloggie HD Camera

Sony 3D Bloggie HD Camera

If you took one thing away from Sony’s presence at CES 2011, it was “3D” Apparently, there are no other innovations right now other than 3D. I wouldn’t be surprised if Terms of Endearment 3 was filmed in 3D.

Sony has updated their popular Bloggie handheld camcorder to record video in high-definition 1080p 3D, making it the cheapest video camera to record in three dimensions on the market. Of course, you’ll still need a 3D television and compatible HDMI cable to view your footage, but if you’re buying the new Bloggie anyway, you probably already know that.

Other features include face-detection (2D only), SteadyShot image-stabilization and a 5-megapixel still image lens, among other things.

At $250, this is still a solid camcorder, even if you don’t have a 3D TV. I just wish Sony would change the name – “Bloggie” is so 2001.

Sony HDR-TD10: Full HD 3D Camcorder

Sony HDR-TD10: Full HD 3D Camcorder

Sony is banking on hopes that 3D will take off this year, and the line of products that they introduced at CES are likely to push consumers further in that direction.

Touted as the world’s first “Double Full HD” 3D camcorder, the HDR-TD10 is equipped with double Sony G lenses, double “Exmor R” CMOS image sensors, and double BIONZ image processors. Other features include:

  • 64GB embedded flash memory
  • 10x optical zoom in 3D mode
  • 2D-to-3D dedicated switch
  • 3D ready 3.5-inch Xtra Fine LCD touch screen
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization
  • Tracking Focus, Golf Shot, and Intelligent Auto Mode
  • 5.1ch surround mic
  • 1920×1080 Full HD 60p/24p recording w/7MP still image capture

Whether or not Sony’s aspirations will take to the mainstream is still unknown, but they’re making a pretty convincing case with the new Sony HDR-TD10.

Looxcie

Looxcie

Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare… it never ends. Surely those people – who think everyone gives a damn about what they’re doing at every single moment of the day – have had enough attention? Apparently not.

Looxcie, pronounced look-see, is a video camera that fits over your ear and films everything you do (and see) at eye level. And while we’re not social media junkies ourselves, we have to admit, this is definitely a device that satisfies the inner-geek.

The camera has enough battery power to continuously record up to 4 hours of video. See someone get knocked out? Get flashed by a bus full of cheerleaders? Witness a robbery? Looxcie has you covered. Just hit the “instant clip” button and the last 30 seconds of footage gets packaged into a video file. The file is then sent to Looxcie’s mobile app via bluetooth, and can be shared through multiple social profiles online – all done automatically if preferred.

True, the video quality isn’t the greatest, but it gets the job done. The mobile app currently only works with most Android devices, but support for additional operating systems is expected to be available later this year.

Ordro HDV-D350S Camcorder

Ordro HDV-D350S Camcorder

Clocking in at 15 lumens and boasting the fact that it’s the first ever HD camcorder with a built-in removeable projector, the Ordro HDV-D350S Camcorder is attempting to change the way you shoot and display home movies. Forget about all of those crinkly crackly 8-millimeters from yesteryear. This is the 21st Century, and it’s time life was shot in HD. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean the Ordro is for you, but it appears to be a pretty solid device, and it delivers on the bonus features.

The Ordro HDV-D350S Camcorder sports a 10x optical zoom, a 3-inch touch screen LCD, and an SD/SDHC card slot for storage purposes. Family vacations, sporting events, Junior’s school play, or just annoying your wife or girlfriend around the house by filming every little thing she does, just got a whole lot easier.

Sony NEX-VG10 Handycam

Sony NEX-VG10 Handycam

It’s getting harder and harder to justify crappy home movies, when you’ve got Sony making a $2,000 case for their state of the art NEX-VG10 Handycam. Billed as the first HD camcorder with an interchangeable lens, you can use this bad boy to shoot 1080p video and 14.2 megapixel stills.

It doesn’t matter if you’re just in to shooting recreational video, or you have serious filmmaker aspirations, the Sony NEX-VG10 Handycam makes life considerably easier on you. Its one drawback is that there is no on-board storage capacity for your videos and stills, but even that isn’t too big of a deal as it will accept SDHC / SDXC as well as MS Pro Duo.

You’ve got the lights and camera. Now all you need is the action!
