Cardiio

By Jason Bacchetta on August 28, 2012

Imagine going back 10 years and telling yourself that you’d be able to measure your heart rate with a phone camera. Well, with Cardiio, it’s now a reality.

Cardiio is an iPhone app that uses your phone’s front camera to analyze the amount of light reflected off of your face. By doing so, it’s actually measuring your pulse. And believe it or not, studies (and user reviews) show that Cardiio measurements are within 3 bpm of a clinical pulse oximeter.

It’s not magic though. The technology is based on science conducted at the MIT Media Lab. Apparently, when your heart beats, blood rushes to your face causing it to absorb more light, resulting in less light being reflected from your face.

All we know is that it works, which makes it a must-have app.
